Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive dementia that causes brain cells to degenerate and die, leading to a continuous decline in thinking, behavioural, and social skills that disrupts the patient’s ability to function independently everyday tasks.
There is no treatment that cures Alzheimer’s disease. In advanced stages, complications from severe loss of brain function can result such as dehydration, malnutrition, infection, or even death.
Causes
Alzheimer’s disease may be caused due to a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors that affect the brain over time. The exact causes of Alzheimer’s disease is not known. It may arise due to few brain proteins that fail to function normally and results in damage to neurons. The process of degeneration and damage begins years before the appearance of first symptoms. By the late advanced stage of the disease, the brain has shrunk significantly. Brain shows the development of plaques and tangles in patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
There are various risk factors that can lead to the development of Alzheimer’s disease like old age, family history and genetics, Down syndrome, mild cognitive impairment, poor sleeping patters, bad lifestyle and health, history of herpes in childhood.
Symptoms
In early stage, the symptoms are difficulty in remembering recent event or recent conversations. Since they don’t remember this, they tend to repeat statements often or ask same questions again and again. Routinely misplace possessions and get lost in familiar places.
In advanced stages, the memory loss is so advanced that eventually they forget the names of family members and everyday objects and have trouble finding the right words to identify objects, express thoughts or take part in conversations. The daily activities like buying groceries, manage finances, wearing clothes properly, finding things, social interactions, playing a favourite game, cooking a meal, bathing etc. was impaired.
All these brain changes affect moods and behaviours that cause depression, apathy, social withdrawal, mood swings, distrust in others, irritability and aggressiveness, wandering, loss of inhibitions, and delusions, such as believing something has been stolen.
Treatment
Few allopathic medicines that are currently available to treat cognitive symptoms. Cholinesterase inhibitors like donepezil (Aricept), galantamine (Razadyne) and rivastigmine (Exelon). These drugs work by increasing levels of cell-to-cell communication by preserving a chemical messenger that is depleted in the brain and also improve neuropsychiatric symptoms, such as agitation or depression. The main side effects of these drugs include diarrhoea, nausea, loss of appetite and sleep disturbances. In people with cardiac conduction disorders, serious side effects may include cardiac arrhythmia.
