What is Eczema?

Eczema, also called Dermatitis, literally means inflammation of the skin and presents with redness, itching and dryness as the initial symptoms. It is not a contagious disease, but can be a source of acute discomfort and embarrassment to the person who has it.

What are the symptoms of Eczema?

Common symptoms include itching, redness and a dry or wet patch on the skin.

Eczema has various types, including:

Contact Eczema:This can happen as a result of an allergy or an irritant substance touching the skin. Allergies can range from cosmetics, perfumes and artificial jewellery to even topical creams and ointments. The commonest irritant for skin resulting in Eczema is the use of detergents. Other irritants include soaps, acetone, etc. When eczema occurs in the newborn or infant wearing diapers, it is called Diaper dermatitis, happening because of contact of skin with urine or stool.

Atopic Eczema:This is an inherited form of Eczema that usually passes from generation to generation. The causative factor is a kind of hypersensitivity that passes through genes. This type shows more of itching.

Seborrhic Eczema:This is an eczema affecting those areas of the body rich in sebaceous glands, including face, scalp, chest and back. Here, the rash is accompanied by scales.

Neurodermatitis:This is a form of Eczema where the skin turns thick and brownish because of the constant trauma of scratching.

Why does Eczema occur?

Inheritance:TPeople with a family history of allergic conditions like Eczema and Hay fever develop this condition more often.

Allergy:Dust, artificial jewellery, cosmetics, perfumes, detergents, acetone, etc. can induce a local reaction on the skin in the form of eczema. The causative factor is a kind of hypersensitivity that passes through genes. This type shows more of itching.

Stress:Stress increases the overall sensitivity levels of the individual and can contribute to eczema.

Smoking:Smoking alters the sensitivity of the body and skin, and can result in Eczema, especially of the fingers.
