Peptic Ulcer

Peptic Ulcer

A peptic ulcer is a breach or sore present in the innermost lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine called duodenum.

About 10-15% of the global population currently suffers from this condition, with duodenal ulcers being more commonly seen than stomach ulcers.

What are the symptoms of Peptic Ulcer?

Peptic ulcer is a remitting and relapsing disease, i.e. there are symptom-free periods in between periods of distress.

  1. Acute pain: is the usual presenting feature which is generally felt in the pit of the stomach (upper central part of abdomen).  The pain mostly comes on at night when the stomach becomes empty of food and the acid comes into direct contact with the acid.
  2. Nausea: Nausea may or may not be accompanied by vomiting. Vomiting of blood may occur if the breached area of the stomach bleeds.
  3. Tarry stools: Stools may appear blackish in colour due to presence of blood that has been subjected to the digestive processes of the stomach and intestines.
  4. Loss of weight and appetite Appetite and weight correspondingly go down over a period of time.

Why does Peptic Ulcer occur?

  1. Helicobacter Pylori: This is a bacteria that inhabits the mucosal layer of the stomach and causes erosion of the lining through its secretions. H. Pylori is the commonest cause of peptic ulcer.
  2. NSAIDs: NSAIDs or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are allopathic medications that block the natural secretion of chemicals in the body called prostaglandins. These chemicals help to maintain the integrity of the mucosal layer in the stomach, and when this is stopped, the mucosal layer is liable to be damaged.
  3. Stimulants: Smoking, chewing tobacco and consuming alcohol can also aid in damaging the mucosal layer and giving rise to ulcers.
  4. Stress: Stress is the most underrated of factors that can give rise to ulcers in the stomach and duodenum.

How does Homeopathy help in Peptic Ulcer?

Homeopathy is a much safer and surer option to treat peptic ulcers. The medicines do not have any side effects and work towards better overall health rather than just relieving symptoms.
